1mm border increases display area

LG.Philips LCD has developed a new 2.4 inch amorphous silicon TFT LCD panel for mobile devices.

What sets it apart from available screens is it's very thin 1mm border, which will allow phone makers to integrate larger screens into their products. The a-Si TFT LCD panels used today have an average border thickness of about 2mm, meaning that the new technology will save roughly 3mm of space diagonally.

Apart from the Narrow Bezel technology and 1mm border, the whole screen is about 50 percent thinner than current models. LG.Philips LCD claims that the reduced size doesn't affect display quality or reliability. No word on power consumption yet.

The new screens should enter mass production sometime next year and Narrow Bezel technology will be applied to other screens in the future.
