Public beta should start in early 2008

Microsoft released
news today that Service Pack 1 for Vista should be in selected testers’ hands in the next few weeks and it is on track to be released for a public beta in early 2008. The company has indicated that SP1 for Vista will feature a great deal of performance oriented and feature upgrades, as well as the normal fixes for outstanding current issues.

What really is surprising is that Microsoft indicated that the express update for SP1 will check in at about 50MB, while the IT oriented stand alone package normally used for large scale IT deployments and preparing SlipStreamed Vista SP1 DVDs will check in at a full 1GB. Yes, that’s right:  the full SP1 package for Vista will be a 1GB download.

The 1GB SP1 upgrade for Vista could spell some deployment troubles for IT shops that have remote users or offices on limited bandwidth connections. Microsoft did indicate that IT support staff can deploy SP1 for Vista from a shared file server, which is normally how most IT shops deploy a service pack upgrade.

Microsoft has indicated that they know that many corporate customers have been waiting for SP1 before even starting to prepare deployment or migration plans for Vista. Much of the waiting has been due to previous less than favorable experiences when Microsoft has introduced a new version of Windows. Microsoft hopes by speeding the release of Service Pack 1 for Vista that large corporate customers will start the typical evaluation and compatibility testing process prior to deployment.
