If all goes according to plan
Digitimes is reporting that Micron is set to take over Qimonda in the very near future as the two companies have come to an agreement to merge their businesses. Both companies have been having a somewhat rough time as of lately, especially with Samsung's big push in the DRAM market.
It's not easy being a memory manufacturer in today's market, with prices in more or less free fall over the last year and very little hope of any change within the near future. DDR3 demand is likely to increase with the launch of Intel's Core i7 platform, but until then it looks like little is set to change.
Micron has been losing money in the last seven quarters and hopefully their merger with Qimonda will allow them to become a stronger player in the memory market. Once the merger has been finalized, Micron/Qimonda will be one of the top four memory manufacturers alongside Samsung, Hynix and Elpida.
Hopefully, this will bode well for the long-term of the memory market, although we're not sure how good this will be for consumers which might end up having to pay higher prices, as there is less competition in the market.
