The same chip

We’ve found out one interesting chip with upcoming native 45nm quad-core. Deneb is the first AMD chip to come with an integrated memory controller that can take care of both DDR2 or DDR3 memory.

Of course, there will be two physically different chips, Deneb DDR3 for socket AM3 and Deneb DDR2 for socket AM2+ with a different physical pin layout and packaging.

AMD has hinted a while ago that AM3 is the socket for DDR3 and that we will all have to make a transition from AM2+ infrastructure, but it is good to know that AMD doesn’t have to tape out two physically different chips to make things work.

Deneb is still on track for late Q4 2008 introduction and some healthy volume production in Q1 2009, of course, if it all goes well.
