Intel takes on Nvidia with help from ATI

According to what appears to be a leaked slide from an Intel presentation over at HKEPC, Intel's upcoming P45 chipset should not only support a single x16 PCIe 2.0 slot, but also the option to run CrossFireX in a dual x8 configuration.

This is the first time Intel has released a chipset that supports PCIe lane switching, something both Nvidia and AMD/ATI has been doing for quite some time. This is indeed good news for AMD/ATI as it opens up a new window for the company to sell more of its high-end graphics cards.

However, what doesn't seem correct with regards to this slide is the mention of an RV680 card from AMD/ATI as this card is meant to have 1,280 Stream processors as well as 2GB of GDDR4 memory.

Either way, if the P45 chipset lives up to these specs, then this could possibly be the best mainstream chipset ever from Intel. The slide also claims that it will support up to 8GB of DDR3 memory, although only at speeds of up to 1,333MHz.

You can find the slide here
