NEC Electronics
has introduced the first SuperSpeed USB 3.0 host controller, and it expects the new standard to be adopted quickly.

The µPD720200 is based on the new SuperSpeed USB standard, and it offers transfer speeds of up to 5 gigabits per second, about 10 times faster than USB 2.0. Of course, the new standard is fully backward compatible with USB 1.0, 1.1 and 2.0.

Thanks to higher transfer speeds, the new controller could be used in a variety of applications apart from PCs, such as TVs, DVDs and similar consumer electronics. Capable of transfering 25GB in 70 seconds, you won't wait too long even if you're copying 1080p content, let alone music and other less demanding media. The high data transfer rate also offers compatibility with recent high-performance computer interfaces such as PCI Express and SATA.

NEC expects to start volume production in June, with about 1,000,000 units per month. The new controler should cost $15.
