Music to the people

Yesterday, Google launched its free song download service in China, where users will legally download licensed songs. Google’s president for China, Lee Kai-Fu said how this was the missing piece to Google’s strategy, as it significantly lags behind the leader in that area Baidu.com Inc.

Mr. Lee added how his company is offering high quality and legal downloads, but music was the missing piece. The service now offers about 350,000 songs both Chinese and foreign, and this number is expected to rise to 1.1 in months to come.

The service will offer music under Sony Music, Warner Music, EMI and Universal Music labels, but there’s no plan on expanding beyond Chinese borders.
