Massive price war wages on

In the
short weeks prior to this past holiday season, the consumer electronics industry witnessed a massive price war among many US and European vendors which saw the cost of Blu-ray Disc players drop below $300 and €230 in their respective markets.

According to Chinese newspaper Economic Daily News, non-branded white box home theater electronics vendors are very likely to sell Blu-ray Disc players for just $150 in 2009.  Additionally, Lite-On IT, the largest Taiwan-based maker of half-height optical disc drives, also plans to offer BD players for $150.

The paper also mentioned that over 5 million players were sold worldwide in 2008, with an expected increase to 11 million units this year, as quoted by Taiwan-based Topology Research Institute.
