CES 2009: Its up to the OEMs

We've learned that Ion is not only meant for small desktops. You can expect to see some notebook/netbook designs based on this platform, but only if someone is bold enough to pull it off.

The biggest problem for the future of Ion is the fact that some brave OEM has to go against Intel to make such a netbook or small desktop possible. We are currently unaware of such a bravery, but this might change.

At the same time, Nvidia's Ion is a way better platform than 945G + Atom, simply because the Nvidia’s 9400 chipset with Atom can play HD 1080P video while Intel’s Atom platform can’t.  Intel knows it and this is exactly why it is against the Atom based Ion platform.

This will be an interesting story to follow, but as long as the platform is not blessed by Intel, it has little chance of become big. We’ve been surprised before so let’s see what Nvidia can do about it.
