For now

According to an article on the TechReport, AMD has decided to pull out of the two socket high-end consumer market for the time being. AMD's Quad FX platform was never that big of a success and it's an expensive platform to purchase and for AMD to make CPUs for.

With the quad core Phenom finally out, there's also little point in having a dual socket, dual core platform. So, for the time being, AMD will concentrate on its Spider platform and single CPU systems for consumer usage.

However, it doesn't mean that dual CPU consumer systems won't be available from AMD in the future and AMD has even gone on record stating "W will continue to support customers that have an existing Quad FX with DSDC and are also working on an upgrade path for those customers. While AMD is not actively promoting AMD Opteron processor as a 2P enthusiast solution, we recognized that there are enthusiasts who are looking for two-socket solutions and think an Opteron platform is well-suited to meet that demand at this time."

It might not be a true consumer level platform, but at least AMD is willing to do something for those that have already invested in what is a very expensive platform. We' would like to see a return of dual CPU systems for the ultra high-end market some time late next year from AMD, if there's still a demand for this type of systems.
