The Universal Music
Group division of Vivendi has announced that it will offer the sale of thousands of albums and tracks that it has license rights to in MP3-format without any digital rights management copy protection software.

Vivendi indicated that this offering is a “trial” that will be available only from August to January 2008. Vivendi will offer the MP3-format sale through various vendors, including amazon.com, Wal-Mart and Google. Absent from the vendor availability list is Apple’s online music store, iTunes.
