CeBIT 08: IBM since 1971

Fujitsu Siemens is one of the sponsors of this year's CeBIT, and we've found their booth in the IT Green Village. Their first "green" PC's were made in 1993, although we doubt that it would have been green by today's standards, if we managed to dig it up from somewhere, that is. Still, Fujitsu Siemens are trying hard to prove that they care.

Their booth was the greenest one and the plant-desk would definitely be a great addition to anyone's setup. We asked them whether they could use the heat from one of the servers to rearrange a garden behind the glass and make it into a terrarium, but the answer was negative. The reason for this is that server memory they use works at 1.5V, and it’s much cooler compared to 1.8V that was used so far. Energy saving is still a primary task.

22’’ and 24’’ Scenicview ECO monitors on the desk consume 0W in standby mode. Of course, if you’re not doing anything, they’ll go in standby mode and as soon as you move your mouse you’re ready to work again.

Scale L green edition PC is Fujitsu Siemens’ flagship model, it consumes very little power and is extremely efficient when it comes to energy saving.

The best way to conserve is to buy low voltage processors, and it’s the buyers that make the choice. Think about what you need and don’t buy a fast server if you don’t need it. Low voltage processors can save you a lot, and we’ve witnessed that on the live demonstration.

AMD Barcelona server processors run cool, but it’s as if they’re waiting for the summer to show that. For now, we’ve seen no traces of them in server field.
