Poor browser experience is the reason

Once again, Microsoft has confirmed that despite the fact that both the PlayStation 3 and Wii have an Internet Browser, the Xbox 360 will not be getting one. It seems that besides larger hard drives, which the company has recently addressed with the release of a 250GB hard drive, the next most popular request from Xbox 360 owners is for an Internet browser.

While the company has developed or worked with Internet content providers to develop Xbox 360 Internet applications such as Twitter, Last.FM, and Facebook, which are normally browser-based applications, the company secretly has studied browser support for the Xbox 360. The browser experience on the Xbox 360 would be poor when compared to what users get with the PC platform.

The company is focused on an experience that is optimized for the living room, and trying to navigate a browser with the ChatPad and an Xbox 360 controller is an absolute nightmare, according to Aaron Greenberg, Xbox director of product management. Even with no actual browser, more access to additional Internet-enabled applications is likely in the works, according to our sources.

The Internet-enabled applications that Microsoft has already released have been so popular that it does seem that they will continue to develop additional applications. While there is no news on what these applications might be, we have to think that we will hear more soon, as Microsoft has been on the cutting edge in this area; and now that others are catching up, it is again time for something new from Microsoft.
