Unique MID device that will draw attention

Dell appears to be putting the finishing touches on the new products that they intend to show at CES this year; and apparently they intend to show a new Mobile Internet Device (MID) as the centerpiece of their offerings for this year. While rumors of such a device being developed by Dell have been circulating for some time, it seems that the company believes that now is the time for them to attempt to jump to the head of the line with what they believe people want.

The MID has been known as the Streak, and it is said to offer a 5-inch WVGA touch screen with built-in Wi-Fi and 3G support for connectivity. It will offer a 5 megapixel camera and will use version 2.0 of the Android OS to power the entire device.

What is not yet exactly known is when Dell might actually put the device into production and at what price they will actually sell it. Our sources seem to think that it will arrive in early March, timed for release just prior to the delivery of the Apple tablets hitting the street; and rumors of a $299 or $399 price tag seem to be what the magic retail number might be. We have to wonder if this device that is likely to go head to head with the iPod Touch is too little too late and whether people will really pay much attention to it. We have to think that price will be the factor that will make the difference on the popularity potential of the Streak.

The Streak will likely have some competitors, as we hear that Asus is also working on getting a MID out the door that they will likely show at CES, as well. It is said to be called the EeePad and it will be a combination MID and PC product that will offer a touch screen and a display that is pegged to be somewhere between 4 to 7 inches, depending on whom you ask. Beyond our own sources, DigiTimes is also suggesting that this is the case.
