Systematic worldwide monopoly campaign they say
After being slapped with a €1.06 billion fine, courtesy of the European Commission, Intel is now in trouble closer to home.
New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo filed a federal antitrust suit
against the chipmaker on Wednesday. Cuomo alleges that Intel engaged in
a worldwide systematic campaign to maintain monopoly power and
manipulate processor pricing.
Cuomo wants to bar Intel from using anticompetitive practices and he is
seeking damages an penalties for the harm caused to consumers and New
York's government entities. More interestingly, the suit seeks to
restore lost competition, which sounds a bit vague.
The fact that AMD spinoff Globalfoundries recently started construction
of a new $4.2 billion fab in New York State and received more than a
billion dollars in state subsidies probably has nothing to do with the
investigation.
