May hold off until HD version Wii is released

As we told you about yesterday, our sources had already confirmed to us that Netflix support for the Wii was coming via a disc option that was just announced for the PlayStation 3. What we did not know until today is the fact that it is already in testing at Nintendo.

According to what we have been able to shake loose today, it could be that Netflix on the Wii might be timed for release at the same time that the rumored updated HD Wii might arrive. As we pointed out yesterday, a release of the Netflix player today would be limited to 480i. Rumors continue that Nintendo has plans for an update Wii version that will add HD support up to 1080p.

Our sources tell us that the original plan was to have a release for the Wii version before the end of this year. Depending on how far along Nintendo is on their next generation HD Wii unit might have more to do with the timing of the release than anything else. It is likely that Nintendo is in discussions with Netflix and they will have to assess the situation; while a release before the end of the year is at least possible, our sources tell us that it is unlikely.
