Retailers report sales off to a good start

So, the all digital-only PSPgo has arrived. We checked with our retail sources today to get an idea of how the sales are doing and while they would describe them as good, they have not seen yet how attracted consumers are to the device.

Both a Game Stop and independent gaming store we spoke with said that buyers had yet to start bringing in PSP units with large libraries of UMD titles to trade in toward their purchase of the PSPgo. Most of the units sold up to this point were to pre-order customers. Neither store we checked with reported receiving a large amount of PSPgo inventory; one store reported that they received 4 units and the other store we checked with received only 6 units (and two of those were for pre-orders).

Early reports suggest that a last-minute firmware update for the PSPgo has arrived that adds some new features. From what we hear, all of the shipping units at the moment have the same firmware as far as we have been able to confirm.

With the launch of the PSPgo, we will see the additions in the PlayStation store for the PSPgo, the new mini games that will range in price from between $5 to $10. At launch, only seven minis titles were available and as others have commented on the subject, only five of them are even worth buying or playing.

The download library online is populated with a variety of titles. While Sony has said that going forward all titles will be released for download as well as on UMD, the company has managed to already get 90 titles in the store that are ready for PSPgo download and, of course, purchase.

Overall, it looks like about what we expected. It is just too early to tell if the cutting edge download only PSPgo will be successful. We do expect that we will have a better idea of what the sales are going to look like after the weekend. We can say that it does at least appear on the surface that the amount of units for the initial launch could be a bit conservative; and depending on the retailer, you could have a bit of a problem finding one. The download only nature of the platform will factor into many users’ decisions to buy one or not, and it remains to be seen how quickly consumers are willing to embrace a download only platform of this type.
