Retailers told no additional orders before the holidays

Our sources are telling us that Apple has let retailers know that supplies of both the iMac and the Mac Mini are now expected to be tight for the holiday season. While Apple did not go as far as to suggest to retailers that supplies were being constrained for the holidays, they did say that they would not be accepting any additional orders for most of the lower-end iMac and Mac Mini models.

The projected shortages seem to be centered primarily around the retail models sold on the lower end for both the iMac and Mac Mini. Our sources tell us that at least two of the high-end configurations of the iMac and the high-end Mac Mini should have ample quantities to make it through the holidays.

Our sources say that Apple is preparing to refresh the iMac and Mac Mini product line soon, as it is pretty much at the end of Apple’s normal established lifecycle for these products.  It is logical that they will want to clear inventory and not re-order additional units with older configurations that could sit on retailer shelves when the new models are announced.

Sources suggest that if you want an iMac or Mac Mini for the holidays, you should act quickly and be prepared to spend more. If you can spend more, the higher-end configurations will likely be what you find that retailers have the greatest numbers of in stock. Some retailers are already telling us that they are sold out of some configurations already, as sales have exceeded what they thought they could move for the holidays.

It is expected that Apple will actually announce the refresh of the iMac and MacBook product lines early next year.
