Ziff Davis has been unable to unload it

The future of Ziff Davis Media’s FileFront has been the subject of a lot of questions since the company announced that it had sold 1UP and decided to close Electronic Gaming Monthly. Speculation has been circulating for some time that Ziff had been trying to peddle FileFront, but given the current economic conditions and large requirements for bandwidth and space, it was a difficult sell at best.

The news has reached us that Ziff will be officially closing FileFront on March 30th, 2009. Beyond a statement on the FileFront Web site saying that the site will close and a thanks to the users that made the site successful, Ziff has said little else.

Ziff has been shifting its focus primarily away from printed media and gaming related content, choosing instead to focus on the PC Mag Digital Network, which includes PC Magazine and ExtremeTech.

While the company is said to have tried to sell off FileFront, with the limited income stream and large bandwidth and storage requirements, no buyers wanted to step up to take on FileFront. The closing of FileFront will leave a hole in the download archive sites arena; and it is expected that FilePlanet, which is owned by IGN Entertainment, could be the big winner to step in and fill the void left by FileFront.
