Vodafone potential European partner

NetbookNews.de spotted an interesting netbook at Linpus booth during CeBIT and to our surprise, the same notebook was being advertised on TV in Taiwan by Taiwan Mobile under their own brand. From the story on NetbookNews we know it's made by Quanta and they suspect it should become available from Vodafone in Europe.

The TaiwanMobile W101 as it will be known as in Taiwan is up for pre-order and you can pick one up for a mere NT$6,990 (€159/£143/$200) if you sign up for a three year 3G contract at the same time which is another NT$699 (€16/£14/$20) a month for truly unlimited usage. Not a bad deal, or see it seems, at least until you start looking at the specifications.

Although it has a 16:9 10.1-inch screen with 1024x576 resolution which we can't say we're too fond of. At 935g it's quite light for a 10-inch netbook, but this is one of its few selling points. It uses the standard Atom N270 processor and the Intel 945GSE chipset, but this is where the good news end as it comes with a mere 512MB of RAM and an 8GB SDD drive. The model sold by Taiwan Mobile comes with Windows XP rather than Linpus and 512MB of RAM just isn't good enough for Windows XP.

The W101 also lacks in the battery department as it only comes with a 3-cell battery as standard which isn't going to last long when you're using the built in 3.5G modem. It also has built in 802.11b/g WiFi, three USB 2.0 ports, a pair of audio jacks, a memory card reader, a built in web cam, but oddly enough, no D-sub connector or other kind of external display connector.
