Apple forgets to mention it

It seems that the cat is now out of the bag with the news that the latest new Apple notebooks have added HDCP support. It also seems that Apple didn’t think to mention this during its recent laptop launch.

HDCP is copy protection that is associated with digital video content that does not allow the video to be displayed on devices that are not HDCP-ready. The existence of the HDCP support was discovered by a user who attempted to play DVD on a projector using a Mini DisplayPort-to-D-sub adapter. Displays with a D-sub (and even DVI in many cases) does not support HDCP and no picture will be displayed when HDCP protected material is played back.

Reports also are suggesting that some iTunes movies are also using HDCP support, while other titles are not HDCP encoded. The DisplayPort has received the blessing from Apple moving forward as the display connector of choice and the addition of HDCP support on DisplayPort might make some read more into Apple’s recent comments about Blu-ray support. Obviously, Blu-ray support does require full HDCP support.
