Connection issues lead to disconnects

We count ourselves among those that experienced connection issues with Xbox Live over the past weekend during a number of times that we tried to use Xbox Live.

Reports suggest that the Xbox Operations Center did notice that a number of users were having problems staying connected to Xbox Live. While Microsoft did investigate and solve the problem, the timing could not have been worse this weekend with Xbox Live drawing many players trying to play both Gears of War 2 and Call of Duty: World at War.

Microsoft experienced some similar problems last year during the holiday season, and many of those problems were not all the way resolved until Microsoft worked on the backend infrastructure of the service. In fact, they only admitted later that they did have problems that were related to capacity and infrastructure on the backend of the service that were not resolved until after January.

Reports suggest that Microsoft sounded an “all clear,” indicating that the issues were resolved, only to find that they were not, in fact, completely resolved and that there were issues that required a bit more troubleshooting to fix the root cause; the problem still remains unknown to the general public at this time.

In related news, Microsoft has announced that they will be performing maintenance on Xbox Live for a 45-minute window that will start at 2:00 A.M. P.S.T., Monday 11/17. The Xbox Live and My Xbox sections of Xbox.com will be unavailable, with the forums being in read-only mode. Microsoft claims that the rest of Xbox.com should be available, but that users could experience possible limited interruptions. The maintenance window is in final preparation for the New Xbox Experience (NXE) that will be rolled out starting Wednesday.
