Offers six times the power of other routers

Cisco has launched the new ASR 9000 series edge router that they claim will deliver a whopping six times the power offered by other products in the same category.

The edge router products are routers that most often are used to provide connections between major carrier providers to wireless networks in areas where traditional cabling is not an option. The need for additional bandwidth performance is necessary with the growing media-rich Internet content that is being used by the majority of Internet users.

The ASR 9000 has already entered testing with major carriers in both North America and Europe. The ASR 9000 will be offered in both a six or ten-slot configuration and could become a standard choice in a variety of wireless deployment scenarios.

The pricing of the ASR 9000 will begin at around $80,000 and will go up from there, depending on the configuration. The ASR 9000 could be a big part of the puzzle in the recent 4G deployment strategies that are starting to be deployed by cellular carriers.
