Social notworking milestone

Facebook has reached a milestone of sorts, the number of uploaded images has broken the 10 billion mark. As Facebook stores four sizes of each uploaded photo the total is actually 40 billion images.

The outfit claims to be celebrating by handing out cupcakes to its engineers. One of the boffins obviously had nothing better to do and calculated that if they had a cupcake for each photo, lined them up side to side, they would reach half way to the moon.

Over at FUD Central we did a bit of number crunching ourselves and calculated that if we had a beer for each one of our stories, we'd be a very, very happy bunch.

Anywhere from 2 to 3 terabytes of images get uploaded to Facebook each day and the site currently has just North of one petabyte of photo storage. Over 15 billion images are served per day and photo traffic peaks at over 300,000 images per second.
