Cars will freeze every 15 minutes to update apps

Google is trying to get more carmakers on board for its Android automotive push.

According to Reuters, the tech giant would like to see upcoming Android M built directly into cars.

Unlike Android Auto or Android Wear, the Google cars would get a full version of Android M, which means they would not rely on smartphones to do much of the heavy lifting. Even without a paired smartphone, the cars would still enjoy all the benefits of Android on board.

Google's Android Auto has not made much headway so far. The first vehicles to support the technology are expected next year and there is no word when cars will get full Android M. The launch should coincide with the rollout of Android M, which pins the date to late 2015.

A number of hardware companies are pursuing the automotive market, ranging from Marvell and Qualcomm to Nvidia.

Providing cars with a full version of Android could open up a number of possibilities, ranging from superior navigation to better diagnostics and telemetry. Plus, it might give kids in the back seat more to do.
