Tonga-based AMD FirePro graphics card

Announced as a part of AMD's FirePro professional graphics card lineup refresh back in August at SIGGRAPH 2014, Sapphire, the exclusive global distribution partner for AMD FirePro graphics cards, has now announced that it has started shipping the new AMD FirePro W7100 professional graphics card.

Based on AMD's Tonga GPU, the AMD FirePro W7100 should be a decent upgrade from the previously available Tahiti-based FirePro W7000 graphics card. It packs 1792 Stream Processors (28 CUs) and comes with 8GB of GDDR5 memory clocked at 5GHz and paired up with a 256-bit memory interface. This larger amount of memory should improve overall workstation speed and responsiveness in various demanding applications, according to Sapphire, including large assemblies, models and data sets as well as 4K video editing or adding multiple effects and color correct on the fly.

Compatible with PCI-Express 3.0, AMD FirePro W7100 delivers data rates of up to 32GB/s and supports DirectGMA access, reducing CPU utilization, bypassing system memory and resulting in high throughput and low latency data transfers. It also features HD Multimedia Engines that should boost performance and support for 4K content in video playback, editing and transcoding.

As it is based on AMD's Graphics Core Next (GCN) architecture, the FirePro W7100 features a Unified Video Decoder which has a full fix-function decode engine with support for H.264, VC-1, MPEG4, MPEG2 and MJPEG and includes support for high frame rate 4K content, while the Video Coding Engine brings support for 4K resolutions and improves H.264 encode.

The AMD FirePro W7100 comes with four DisplayPort 1.2a outputs which allows for four or more displays to be connected simultaneously. It natively supports up to three 4K SST panels at 60Hz and up to six monitors connected in AMD Eyefinity mode.

The Sapphire AMD FirePro W7100 is now currently listed in Europe for around €650, depending on the region, while in the US it should sell for US $799.99.
