AVG might face sell off

Buyers snuffling around

AVG Technologies has been approached by potential buyers amid a wave of deals for its rival security-software makers. It is expected that details of any potential buyer should be known soon. AVG Technologies provides software that neutralizes viruses and spams and provides internet security.

Private-equity firms have been increasing their bets on security-focused technology providers. AVG was Grisoft's first product, "Anti-Virus Guard", launched in 1992 in Czechoslovakia. In 1997, the first AVG licenses were sold in Germany and UK. AVG was introduced in the U.S. in 1998.

In 2006, the AVG security package included spyware, and AVG Technologies acquired ewido Networks, an anti-spyware group. The company continued to expand and acquired Exploit Prevention Labs (XPL) in December 2007, and Sana Security in March 2009. More than 106 million people have AVG Anti-Virus protection partly because there is a popular free edition.
