Tesla-based servers meet ARM 64 SoC

by on11 August 2014

Several OEMs shipping

Nvidia had a good quarter and managed to beat the street with strong earnings and growth in several key markets.

One interesting part of the financial conference call was that sales of high performance Tesla computing units grew. Nvidia pointed out that several OEMs announced that they will ship Tesla based servers combined with an ARM 64 SoC (System-on-chip). Nvidia didn’t comment if any of OEMs plan to use Nvidia’s own Denver based dual-core CPU and Kepler based graphics cores.

ARM 64-bit server processors will initially target the micro web services, but the GPU might expand their market reach. Nvidia says it has the opportunity to target new markets "by providing them (GPU) muscle to tackle HPC workloads."

The success of ARMv8 in the micro server space has yet to be proven, but the fact that these SoCs are really efficient might be interesting to a few companies.

Nvidia also mentioned that Tesla GPUs now power the world's 15 most energy-efficient supercomputers as listed in the Green500 list and we are quite sure that this market really likes GPUs for tasks that can be handled in a very parallel and smart way.

Tegra K1 64 should be the official name of what we knew as Project Denver, and the ongoing rumour claims that this chip powers the next generation Nexus tablet with Android L.

All in all, we expect another strong quarter from Nvidia.
