Daft speculation of the day

Now that Microsoft King, Bill Gates, has cleaned out his desk to leave the company there is some amusing speculation that the outfit is planning to go more Open Source.

The rumor, which is a bit like saying Steve Jobs will be less of a control freak, is based on an idea that Bill was the only reason that Microsoft didn’t move from its proprietary monopoly based system. Since Gates moved back a bit there had been a move from the likes of Sam Ramji’s group in Microsoft to work more closely with the Open Source community.

With Gates gone the only thing that would be blocking any more moves to Open Source would be CEO and bouncing wooly mammoth Steve Ballmer. Barry Crist, CEO, Likewise Software, said for much of Microsoft’s history its primary strategic initiative has been Windows everywhere.

To get from $50 to $100 billion the company will have to embrace the non-Windows world. He said that this will be easier for Microsoft to do without Gates. No one expects Microsoft to open source any of its crown jewels but even Microsoft programmers expects to see more openness and source code releases in the post Gates era.
