iPhone 5S to feature 64-bit processor?

by on26 August 2013

31 percent faster, dual-core

To be honest, we’re were not looking forward to Apple’s new iPhone 5S that much. The iPhone 5C is a bit more interesting, as the 5S was only supposed to be a refresh, with a fingerprint reader and a few tweaks.

However, if Fox News is to be believed, it will have something very interesting under the bonnet – a custom 64-bit application processor. The rumoured A7 chip is said to be a dual-core, 31 percent faster than the A6.MacRumours and 9to5Mac have also reported that Apple has already tested prototype 64-bit chips, although they can’t say for sure than it will end up in the new iPhone.

It would be an interesting twist. The Android gang is already going for quad-core parts based on A9, A15 or Krait cores. Instead of adding more cores, Apple might roll out a heavily customized 64-bit part, which might offer more efficiency.
