1Gbps speed in 2008/9
The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) has published draft information on 802.16 and created a new wireless standard called 802.16m. It is expected that the new standard will not be released until 2008 or 2009.The IEEE wants 802.16m to be able to deliver 1Gbps transfer rates over the air.
One of the requirements is that it can meet downstream speeds of up to 1Gbps in a "nomadic" mode. It will also have a 'high mobility' mode for 100Mbps rates. The key to the standard is the use of multiple-input/multiple-output (MIMO) technology. MIMO is currently used in 802.11g and 802.11n routers and access points.
Although 802.16m is not part of the WiMAX standard, the IEEE committee indicated there will be cross platform compatibility between the two standards. It will also be compatible with future 4G wireless networks.
