Gigabyte tweaks Intel’s NUC

Mini with a Core i7 CPU

Gigabyte has been playing around with the Intel Next Unit of Computing.

At the moment the platform measures just over 10 cm by 10 cm and has a core i3 processor. But Gigabyte is after a lot more than that. The PC maker has taken Intel’s design and pimped it up by adding support for Core i5 or Core i7 chips. The only difference is that Gigabyte added a few more vents to the case than Intel’s NUC normally has.  But the Gigabyte mini PC also features support for USB 3.0, while Intel’s model only manages a flaccid USB 2.0.

There are also HDMI input and output ports, an Ethernet jack, and WiFi. Gigabyte said the final design is still being worked on and it might be different by the time the PC ships in April. No word on price yet, but with support for up to 8GB of RAM, a Core i7 chip, and a 256GB solid state disk, a top-of-the-line model will probably  slightly more than the $499.
