3rd gen speedster delivers more performance

Seagate announced the launch of its new 3rd generation 7200 RPM Momentus notebook hard drives with capacities up to 320GB. While 320GB notebook hard drives have been available for quite some time now and Hitachi GST still has a 500GB 5400 RPM model, the release of the 7200 RPM 320GB Momentus hard drive is the first to hit this size, while delivering a 7200 RPM spindle speed in a 2.5” notebook form factor.

The 7200 RPM hard drives are targeted at high-performance notebook applications where battery life and heat generated are secondary to the raw performance of the hard drive itself. Seagate claims that the Momentus 7200.3 series only sips 2.1 Watts during a read/write process and 2.3 Watts during a seek. This is not the lowest that we have seen, but is respectable nonetheless.

According to Seagate, Dell and Alienware will be the first system builders to offer the new hard drives in their notebooks. The 160GB drive will be available as a $75 upgrade over the standard 5400 RPM 160GB hard drive in select Inspiron and XPS notebooks. The 250GB model will cost an extra $250 premium. Not surprising, the 320GB model has not been listed as an option yet. We suspect that the 320GB model has not been through validation yet, or Seagate is not able to deliver the 320GB model in sufficiently large numbers currently.
