Apple licensing designs to Microsoft

Written by Nick Farrell

Still wants to kill Samsung

Apple has signed a patent-licensing agreement with Microsoft which will mean that Redmond will not be sued. Patent licensing director Boris Teksler confirmed that Microsoft has licensed iPhone and iPad design patents from Apple.

Microsoft would not be allowed to actually clone Apple gear but it would be saved from all the patent nonsense that has been a problem for Samsung. The design patents licensed by Microsoft could be used as a bigger part of a unique design but outright copying is prohibited.

In 2010 Apple and Samsung discussed potential licensing terms as a way to avoid litigation. Documents from those discussions show that Apple was willing to offer licenses on certain patents for the price of $30 per Samsung smartphone.
