The iPhone will have its fifth birthday bash in just two days from now on June 2007 and according to Strategy Analytics the birthday boy has generated a whopping $150 billion in revenue since its launch.

This of course encompasses every iPhone launched to date, including the original iPhone, iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S, and combined shipments in excess of 250 million units. These numbers come from the mouth of Neil Shah, Senior Analyst at Strategy Analytics and Neil Mawston, Executive Director at Strategy Analytics.

“The iPhone portfolio has become a huge generator of cash and profit for Apple. A quarter of a billion iPhones have been shipped cumulatively worldwide in the first five years since launch and Apple reaches its fifth birthday at the top of its game,” said Mawston.

Apple has practically created a religion, with millions of consumers head over heels for its 3.5-inch phone, so much so that they are willing to put up with just about anything that Cupertino serves up. The hopes for next iPhone to have a larger screen are in the minds of many, but even if Apple fails to comply with this wish, people will still buy it as an upgrade for their ageing iPhone 4 or 4S. The next iPhone will speak Sirish even better we assume.

To put things in perspective, $150 billion is the annual GDP of Romania, a new EU member state with a population of 19 million. Over the course of five years, the iPhone generated about as much cash as Jordan, a nation of 6.5 million.

It is truly an impressive result for Apple. The company managed to reinvent the smartphone and bring it to mainstream consumers. In the process, it outpaced the competition, in particular established smartphone makers such as RIM and Nokia.
