Ultrabook sales won’t hit Intel estimates in 2012

by on06 December 2011

Tablets will outsell traditional notebooks

A new report by iSuppli claims tablets are the new black and ultrabooks will fail to hit Intel sales targets in 2012. As a result, shipments of traditional notebooks are set to decline over the next four years.

Tablets will lead the charge and iSuppli reckons more than 250 million units will ship by 2015. Sales of traditional notebooks in 2015 will drop to 188 million from 217 million in 2011. Overall the notebook market is looking pretty healthy in the long run, as ultrabooks will enter the fray and hit 136 million units by 2015.

All is not well, however, as ultrabooks will miss Intel sales forecasts. Intel had rather high hopes for ultrabooks and expected they will make up about 40 percent of all notebooks shipped in 2012. This won’t be the case, they will hit just 12 percent and the 40 percent target will be met in 2014 – 2015.
