$299 Tegra 3 tablets in the pipeline

Nvidia boss Jen-Hsun Huang is pinning Nvidia’s, and the industry’s future on the success of mobile computing. Huang reckons new tablets, with more processing power and physical keyboards will change personal computing as we know it.

“Mobile computing is going to become our most personal computer and it is going to revolutionize the way everybody uses computers in the future,” he told Bloomberg.

Commenting Nvidia’s Tegra 3 plans, Huang said the first tablets based on the new chip should ship in time for the holiday season, while phones will appear in Q1 2012. Huang dismissed poor sales of Android tablets, saying the market was still in its early stages of development. He noted that Ice Cream Sandwich and Windows 8 could help boost sales in 2012.

“I still hold my hopes out for these two very interesting developments. It is still the beginning,” he said.

At a press event in New York, Huang told reporters that Nvidia’s cunning plan for 2012 is to focus on more affordable tablets. The price target for upcoming Tegra 3 tablets is $299, which sounds quite a bit more competitive that current high-end Android tablets.

However, at this point sales of Android tablets are pretty underwhelming and as a result vendors are reportedly already cutting back or suspending Android tablet development. It still remains to be seen whether next generation Android tabs will be able to compete with Apple and match the success of Android phones.
