Tegra 3 in HTC Edge confirmed

by on09 November 2011

First non-Qualcomm chip

Pocketnow broke the news that HTC is working on a quad-core phone codenamed Edge. It even has pictures to back it up, here.

Part of our job is to know people, who know people and one of these confirmed that HTC indeed is working on a quad-core phone and that the chip inside is Nvidia Tegra 3. It should be clocked at 1.4GHz to 1.5GHz and this is the first time that HTC is using a chip that doesn’t come from Qualcomm.

HTC has a very tight relationship with Qualcomm, but since Qualcomm gets quad core only in early 2013, this was the one way to go, at least for now. The launch timeframe could also be narrowed to late Q1 and early Q2 2012 but these things tend to change.

With a little bit of luck, HTC Edge will be the first quad-core phone that comes roughly a year after first dual-core LG Optimus 2X that came launched on 1st of March 2011. With a 4.7-inch 1280x720 screen, you need as much horsepower and energy saving as you can get, and Tegra 3 sounds like a fun chip to ride.
