GameFly not worried about Qwikster

by on21 September 2011

Distribution network could be the key difference
GameFly seems to be putting the best spin possible on the news that Qwikster (the new Netflix disc rental company that we told you about yesterday) will be starting to offer video game rentals for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Wii.

While GameFly might not be complaining out loud, it is obvious that with Qwikster coming to the mail-order video game rental table things could become difficult for GameFly. The major difference in our opinion will be the efficient distribution system that Qwikster (Netflix) has. This could be the key advantage Qwikster has over GameFly; and based on our own experience, it is an area where GameFly has struggled in the past, but seems to be improving.

The bigger question might actually be the pricing. GameFly has never been cheap, and based on the comments from CEO Reed Hastings, Qwikster isn’t going to be cheap, either. Still, the all-in-one service that you can rent DVD, Blu-ray and video games from might just be too appealing to pass up. Don’t expect it to be low-priced, however.

GameFly has continued to grow and expand and to handle challengers such as Blockbuster and Redbox as both have gone deeper into the game rental business. The company is also investing in digital distribution with acquisitions such as Direct2Drive, which shows GameFly wanting to be a digital distribution provider as well as a disc/game rental company.
