Apple to release cheap iPhone in Asia

Written by Nick Farell

Will have a smaller flash-drive
Asian suppliers to Apple have reportedly begun manufacturing a lower-priced version of  the iPhone 4 with a smaller 8 gigabyte flash drive.

The flash drive for the 8GB iPhone 4 is being manufactured by a “Korean company”, that could mean South Korea's Samsung which is Apple's supplier when it is not being sued. The iPhone 4 was first launched in June 2010 with 16 GB and 32 GB versions, with a white version added to the lineup in April. The 8GB version is expected to launch within weeks.

Apple appears to be wanting to push into the emerging market segment where customers want to switch to low- to mid-end smartphones from high-end feature phones, which usually cost $150-200. Even with an 8 GB hard drive Apple would be hard pressed to get the phone below $200 without losing some other functions.

The new iPhone, which some call the iPhone 4S because of its largely identical appearance to the existing iPhone 4, will have a bigger touch screen, better antenna and an 8-megapixel camera.

Apple will no longer be hip in the international market.

Will users be able to hold it in their left hand? Or maybe Steve Jobs will have to learn Mandarin so he can yell at them too.

how much does another 8gb of flash actually cost? apple can sell all of their phones cheaper to begin with, if they are actually trying to hit a "poor" market. if they wanna sell cheaper phones... they should offer a 16gb with a 3.5inch screen and a 16gb with a 4.3 inch screen..etc. my evo 4g comes with 8gb, which is plenty for me and has a 4.3inch screen, my wife just got a new plan with sprint and got the evo 4G for FREE....beat that apple!!!

This clearly shows Apple going for a market segment only if they HAVE to rather than need to. They wanted to milk as much from the existing model and can see the sub $200 market emerging for some time.
I doubt if they can make much difference unless the price is really low and counting on carrier data fees to subsidize the offer price. Still many manufacturers are trying. Look at Samsung and LG having plenty of models in that segment which does very well in the market. The volumes on this end is 3X to 5X that of the high end.
So it makes sense if a manufacturer can move volumes quickly.
