AMD has announced that it will make its proprietary 3-year-old Performance Library of more than 3,200 software routines available as open-source code, to aid developers in building multithreaded applications for x86 machines that are AMD and Intel-based. The AMD Performance Library (APL) is named Framewave Version 1.0.

According to AMD’s Web site, “…the goal of this new open source project is to further enable the performance-optimized APL and expand its functionality beyond the existing core media capabilities; ensuring developers have an accelerated conduit to high performance application development.” Framewave offers internal threading features with sophisticated threading models to take advantage of multi-core and multi-processor systems and should enable faster development of media player projects, codecs, audio and media streaming applications.

According to Earl Stahl, Vice President of Software Development at AMD, “AMD’s release of its APL code to the Framewave open source project represents another milestone contribution to the open source community. We believe that Framewave will quickly become a significant resource for developers, helping them to build faster, highly optimized and multi-threaded applications more efficiently. Developer collaboration is one of the cornerstones of AMD's software vision, so we are excited to see what innovations the community will develop leveraging Framewave."

The Framewave Version 1.0 can be downloaded here: http://framewave.sourceforge.net/.
