Sony is now telling PSN customers that they should protect themselves “against possible identity theft or other financial loss,” as they confirm that they now believe that performance information has been compromised. This now includes the strong possibility of a breach of the security that protects credit card information that is linked to your account.

As the outage continues and PlayStation owners unable to use the service continue to rage over the service unavailability, and now the possibility that credit card data linked to PSN accounts has been compromised, we have to admit that owners really have something to complain about now.

Sony again delivered their standard message that they are doing everything possible to get the service back up and running and strengthening security so that this never happens again. Of course, they are assuring customers that they are going to do whatever it takes to resolve these issues as soon as possible.

The PlayStation Network has been offline since last Wednesday and remains so as of this story. Sources confirm to us that it could be as long as another week before service is fully restored, and that news isn’t going to make PS3 owners happy.
