Not as surprising as it actually sounds
Sony finally confirmed what we have been telling you all along which is the company planned to introduce a new PlayStation Portable or PSP2 if you will. They finally confirmed this will the announcement of the PSP2 or what they are calling “Next Generation Portable” today at a press conference in Japan.

As for what makes up the PSP2, we pretty much had all of that right. While the company would not confirm at this time what CPU and how much RAM the unit will have, we know for sure that it will offer a touch sensitive 5 inch OLED screen with a resolution of 960x544 and it will use new flash media storage format which means UMD is now dead. It packs big wireless punch with support for Wi-Fi, GPS, and 3G cellular data as we told you about last week. As for controls it will a D-Pad as well as left/right shoulder buttons and the standard PlayStation buttons and as a twist it will offer a touch sensitive back panel, but we are currently a little bit hazy how this will be used.

As for games the only once that were confirmed so far include: Gravity Daze, Little Deviants, and Reality Fighters which are the new titles. In addition PSP2 editions of existing franchises are coming as well including: LittleBigPlanet, Killzone, Hot Shots Golf, Hustle Kings, Uncharted, and Wipeout. Monster Hunter Portable was also shown for PSP2. The PSP2 will also offer the ability to play PSOne games that will be offered via the PlayStation Suite platform and it will offer compatibility for downloadable PSP titles as well.

Sony did confirm that the PSP2 will arrive in Japan for the holiday season, but remain a bit cryptic as to the availability outside of Japan, but sources tell us that it could be early 2012 before we see the unit arrive in North America or Europe. No official pricing was announced, but it is expected that it will cost slightly more than the Nintendo 3DS for sure.
