Revived Blitz likely in the works

by on22 November 2010

EA pleased with NBA Jam performance
After successfully reviving and creating a totally new chapter in the history of the NBA Jam franchise with its new offering, Electronic Arts apparently isn’t going to stray too far for an encore. Whispers tell us that they are now sure that EA has acquired more Midway licenses than just NBA Jam. Next up will be a total revival of the NFL Blitz franchise.

The revival of NFL Blitz is already in development with Mark Turmell, who was one of the original creators at the helm in the EA Tiburon studio. (EA Tiburon is the same studio where Madden is developed.) Sources tell us that while development is already on the way; don’t look for it to arrive till 2012 at the earliest.

The new NFL Blitz revival in the franchise will be reportedly returning to its arcade roots when it arrives, and not continue the direction that Midway was taking the franchise when they went under. Idle chit chat we hear says that EA is looking to replicate the success of NBA Jam and provide a similar experience with NFL Blitz, but not develop a NFL Blitz competitor to Madden NFL. Since EA does hold the NFL license it is likely that the new Blitz title will use NFL teams and players.

While EA is pleased with the new NBA Jam release and the success that it has been receiving, if done right we do think it is possible to duplicate this success with a revived NFL Blitz. The bad news is that it is long time to wait till 2012. The thing we are left wondering is what other licenses might EA have acquired during its going out of business sale. Could it be that EA has plans for more Midway revivals in the future?
