New 320GB hard drive option (CECH-2500)

A week before E3 2010 began in mid-June, an interesting batch of new PS3 models surfaced in the FCC’s test labs and have since been a topic of discussion among avid console cowboys. PS3 models CECH-2501A and CECH-2501B appeared in the record books on June 10th and are both certified for 802.11b/g WiFi and Bluetooth 2.0+ EDR and only differ in their hard drive configurations. For some, the question to be answered was if these models belonged to the PS3 Slim lineup or if they were destined to feature something even more.

Nevertheless, the speculation can be put to rest as Sony Japan just issued a press release announcing a new 160GB “Classic White” PS3 Slim model and 320GB charcoal black PS3 Slim for Japan. Interestingly enough, the model series on these units is CECH-2500 and they will be releasing on Thursday, July 29th for 29,980 yen (including tax) and 34,980 yen (including tax) respectively.

The company has also announced a new “PS3 Digital Recorder Pack” that includes a black 160GB PS3 Slim model (CEJH-10011) and a “tome” digital recorder. This unit will be available on July 29th  for 36,980 yen (including tax).

Accordingly, Sony Japan will also be releasing a Classic White DUALSHOCK 3 Wireless Controller and Classic White console stand for the new 160GB model with suggested retail prices of 5,500 yen (including tax) and 2,000 yen (including tax) respectively.

No word yet from Sony regarding international availability for the new models, but we are anticipating another press release within two to three weeks of the first sales on Japanese markets.
