GeCube HD 2900XT beats 8800GTS 640MB - 3.Testing and 3Dmarks

Review: Good bang for your buck

Testing

ATI Radeon HD 2900XT is almost two months old and you can buy it for €340. The price is about €40 cheaper than the cheapest GeForce 8800GTS card, but Radeon HD 2900XT is €100 cheaper than 8800GTX card.

Our guest today, GeCube Radeon HD 2900XT runs at 743MHz core speed and 1656MHz memory speed. For testing we used the same scenario as for the first HD2900XT we tested in our lab – Power Color HD 2900XT.

We’ll soon refresh the table with Vista results, but today we’re still using good old Windows XP. The new drivers are also out, so two generations have changed. For now, the drivers are Catalyst 7.6 dating from June. We were (un)lucky to witness the new drivers just upon completion of this test so we had to do the whole thing once again. We left the results of first testing so you can see the difference in performance between the old and the new drivers.

In 3DMark03 test, GeCube Radeon HD 2900XT is closer to 8800GTX card than 8800GTS one. We see it’s much better than Radeon X1950XTX, it scored 14612 marks more – it equals 63% more power. HD 2900XT is 5158 marks better than GeForce 8800GTS, but it loses to GeForce 8800 GTX by about 3000 marks.

The first column features results from April when we tested it with the unofficial driver version 8.364. 3DMark03 is still the only test that yearns for the old drivers. The new Catalyst 7.6 version is a bit better than Catalyst 7.5.
