Notebook makers seem keen to use Intel's new SU4x00 and SU7x00 series
ultra low voltage processors in their upcoming thin-and-light notebook
designs, and a few existing designs will get a dual-core makeover as
well.
Lenovo will use the SU4100 and SU7300 on its recently introduced and utterly gorgeous U450, as you can see
here.
Asus is also readying a couple of models based on the new chips, and we
will write about them in more details once we get a bit more info.
Acer's entire Timeline family is also getting the new chips, and you'll
be able to recognize them by a 'Z' suffix in the designation. Some
early listings of the new Timeline and Travelmate SKUs have already
appeared in Europe, and the prices seem fair. The new models based on
the dual-core SU4100 end up a bit pricier than SKUs based on the
single-core SU3500, but they are still significantly cheaper than the
current dual-core models based on the SU9400.
We will update the story when we get more details, as the current
listings are probably not very reliable and will probably be taken down
anyway. In any case, the new SKUs probably won't be available for at least a month, so there's really no rush. At this point, it seems like a pretty good idea to wait a bit if you're interested in getting a CULV-based notebook. In a couple of months you'll have a much broader choice of CPUs, Windows 7, and we wouldn't be surprised if some vendors start using Nvidia's ION in their thin-and-lights.
