Mature titles just not working on the platform

Sega is going to back off on the development of Mature (or M rated if you like) titles for the Wii platform, according to our sources. The company released two Mature titles for the Wii last year, which were MadWorld and House of the Dead: Overkill, and while both titles received pretty good reviews the sales on the Wii platform were just not there.

Like Electronic Arts who released the M-rated Dead Space Extraction title, which was unable to break 10,000 units in the first month for the Wii, Sega has evaluated the numbers and it is now unlikely that the company will forge ahead with the development of additional Mature rated titles for the Wii platform.

While whispers from the Sega camp indicate that even with the slow uptake on the two mature titles that have released they will make their numbers, but neither will be the breakout Mature title that the company hoped to see on the Wii platform. According to those claiming to be in the know, Sega is very pleased with how both MadWorld and House of the Dead: Overkill came out in the end and they think the reviews bear this fact out.

Again, this just goes to show that the younger age of many of the gamers on the Wii seem to drive the sales. and those with multiple consoles just prefer to buy their Mature rated titles for the Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3 platforms. It seems that from the talk we continue to hear the slower sell rate of titles for the Wii platform, combined with the more fickle nature of the Wii buyer, seems to be a serious factor in why many developers are passing on the development of Wii titles. While we don’t think this will be the end of Mature titles for the Wii platform, we do think that there will continue to be a lot less Mature titles developed for the Wii in the future.
