And proudly marches on

Fifteen?
Gee, it doesn't look a year over thirteen, I must say. (You a priest now? sub.ed.) Jokes aside, the PlayStation brand has proudly stepped into the sixteenth year of existence on the market, with quite a few accolades under its belt.

The first PlayStation hit Japan on 3rd of December 1994, and continued to march on its road to becoming THE gaming device, next to the PC of course. Europeans had to wait until the 29th of September 1995, but it was worth the wait as it has proven to be an instant hit.

A bit of number crunching reveals that the first PlayStation has so far sold staggering 125 million units wordwide, and the only console that sold more is PlayStation 2 with 138 million. The PS3 on the other hand, still has a long way to go to go anywhere near Sony's "oldtimers" as it sold about 27 million units until September 2009.

Sony's site features a fun little retrospective of the console's history packet into a neat little flash animation which you can check out here.
