$2 game rentals are closer to a full roll out

Movie rental kiosk giant, Redbox, appears to be one step closer to moving forward with larger scale roll out in the U.S. of their Gamebox kiosks that they have been trialing in a limited number of locations. Redbox was one of the first to market with the $1 per day movie DVD rental kiosk concept, and enjoys a large deployment of movie rental only kiosks already.

The Gamebox concept is a bit different for the company, as they will be departing from their $1 per day rentals on movies to a $2 per day model on video games. In addition, the Gamebox kiosk is able to sell new titles, as well, according to reports.

Redbox looks to head off the problems that the company has had with movies studios being unhappy with the company’s $1 per day movie rental business model by reaching out to game publishers and developers ahead of time in an effort to form partnerships. Redbox does not want a repeat of the problems that they have had with unhappy movie studios that has cause the company so much grief and has, in fact, gotten to the point where some studios are refusing to sell movie titles to Redbox because they feel that the $1 per day rentals undermine the sell-through ability on DVD titles.

According to our sources, the game publishers and developers are listing to what Redbox has to say about their Gamebox business model. Of course, the Gamebox kiosks dispense actual physical media, and many publishers believe that the future is still in digital distribution; but they cannot afford to not take a close look at Gamebox as a new potential revenue stream.
